"WHAT TYPE OF EDITING DO I NEED?"
Polished, engaging, impactful writing requires editing.
Read below to find out what type of editing is best for your project at its current stage.
The 4 Stages of Editing
Developmental Editing
a.k.a. "Content Editing" or "Substantive Editing"
Focus: Whole document
Structure | Big picture | Overall content
Overall clarity of message, holes in plot or argument, character arc, setting, pacing, total word count
Stylistic Editing
a.k.a. "Line Editing"
Focus: Mainly paragraph-level
Flow | Tone | Consistency
Transitions, paragraph length, word choice, jargon, inconsistencies, redundancies, excessive use of passive voice
Copyediting
a.k.a. "Copy Editing"
Focus: Sentence-level
Clarity | Correctness | Conciseness
Grammar, spelling, punctuation, wordiness, sentence length, style guide adherence.
May also include fact-checking (light or full).
Proofreading
The last check before printing or publishing
Focus: Word-level
Format | Layout | Quality Control
Missing or repeated words, pagination, indentation, spacing, font size, etc.
I currently offer both copyediting and proofreading services, both of which can be combined with fact-checking. Billing can be handled by the hour, by the word, or by the page.
STYLE GUIDES
Personally, I'm a serial comma/Oxford comma fan! However, in addition to The Chicago Manual of Style, I can work with The Associated Press Stylebook or any proprietary style guide.

My default reference for spelling is the Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary.
